In Math, we started to study for our fraction test. We took our test on Friday and boy was that hard. We also took a bunch of time studying for the test (which was super easy). The stuff we had to do on the test was find equivalent fractions, adding fractions, subtracting fractions, comparing fractions, turning fractions into decimals, changing mixed fractions into improper fractions, reducing fractions, changing improper fractions into mixed numbers, putting fractions on a number line, multiplying fractions, and ordering fractions.
In Language Arts, we finished Charlotte's Web. It was spectacular! In the beginning, a girl named Fern stopped her father from killing a runt pig she calls Wilbur. In the middle of the book, Wilbur gets a friend named Charlotte (a spider). He also finds out that he is going to be killed and he starts getting worried, so he started running across his yard (at Zuckerman's farm). Charlotte steps in and she says she will help save Wilbur's life. So she started weaving words in her web and the people bought it and started thinking otherwise about killing Wilbur. At the end, Wilbur lives but Charlotte dies after laying her eggs at the fair. Wilbur took her egg sack she made and brought it back to the farm. The eggs hatched and 511 of Charlotte's children left the farm and 3 of her children decided to stay at the farm. This week in Language Arts, we also finished our friendship paper that we started last week.
In Science, we learned about chemical changes. A chemical change is like a physical change but the matter changes completely. Some examples of chemical changes are rusting, burning, and tarnishing. We also started making comic strips about matter, mass, solutions, mixtures, rusting, etc.
This week we also had our Valentine's Party. We ordered a party sub from Subway. It was huge! It was taller than us, but we finished every last piece of it.
This week was the best one yet!

February 7-11, 2011
This week was a winter wonderland.
This week in Language Arts, we read more of Charlotte's Web. Charlotte's Web is about a pig named Wilbur, a little girl named Fern, and a spider named Charlotte. At the moment in the book, Charlotte is trying to save Wilbur's life by writing things in her web. She's written "Some pig" and "Terrific". Everybody thinks that the writing on the web is a sign. We also started a paper on friendship.
This week in math, we learned about reducing fractions. Reducing fractions are fractions that you make smaller by finding the greatest common factor of each number in the fraction and dividing that number by each number in the fraction. We also learned about ordering fractions. Ordering fractions are fractions that have two or more fractions that you put in order. You do that by finding the fraction with the greatest denominator and then you turn the other fractions into fractions with that denominator. Also, we learned about multiplying fractions. To multiply fractions, you multiply the numerator on one fraction by the numerator of another fraction. You also multiply the denominator of one fraction by the denominator of another fraction.
This week in Science, we learned about mixtures and solutions. Mixtures are two or more things mixed together that can be easily separated. Solutions are things that spread evenly through other things. We also learned about length and volume. Length is how long something is. Volume is how much there is of something. Also we learned about mass and density. Mass is the amount of space something takes up. Density is how mcuh something weighs. We also learned about physical changes. Physical changes are ways that you can change something by changing the color, size, shape, height, and weight.
This week was a blizzard of fun!

This week was Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
In Math we learned how to compare fractions: 4/9 < 5/6, so 5/6 is bigger. How we did it, you ask? Ok, we did cross multiplication and how we did that is this. We multiplied the second denominator by the first numerator and got 24. Then we multiplied the first denominator by the second numerator and got 45. Forty-five is greater than 24, so 5/6 is bigger.
In Language Arts, we started to read Charlotte's Web by E.B. White. We got past the part where Wilbur meets Charlotte.
In Science, (yep, we switched back to Science), we are learning about matter. Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Mass is the amount of material that an object has in it. Did you know that 78% of the air we breath is nitrogen? If you didn't know, now you do. Nitrogen is invisible gass. There are three types of matter--solids, liquids, and gases. One example of a liquid is lemonade. One example of a solid is a chair, and one example of a gas is steam.
We also had two snow days this week due to the Groundhog Day storm.
